Are stores open on Memorial Day 2026? Holiday hours for Walmart, Costco, stocks, banks, and more
Memorial Day is a federal holiday honoring people who lost their lives while fighting for the United States. It originated from remembrances of Civil War soldiers and expanded as wars continued. Since 1971, it has been observed on the last Monday in May. On Memorial Day, USPS is closed and mail is not delivered, except for Priority Mail Express. Many UPS locations are closed with no pickup or delivery services, except for UPS Express Critical. FedEx has no delivery services and modified hours at physical locations, while FedEx Custom Critical operates 365 days a year. Major banks are closed in person, but online banking and some ATMs remain available. The stock market is closed, and most schools are closed. Most major pharmacy chains remain open.
"Physical brick-and-mortar locations for major banks such as Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo are not open on Memorial Day. But online banking is available. ATMs outside of branches are also a good alternative. There is no buying or selling of stocks on Memorial Day. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq exchange are closed."
