"The big change is signaled in the subtitle. Transgender History, a Resource for Today's Struggle and Tomorrow's. Even when the second edition came out, the subtitle given to it by the publishers was "The Roots of Today's Revolution," to distinguish that from [the first printing in 2008.] That was what they wanted to go with, and I'm happy to go with that. But after the events of the past year, it just felt like it rang hollow."
"Her book has already helped generations of trans people engage with their history and find community, and the new edition will help future generations make sense of what we're living through now. In the midst of an overwhelming anti-trans crusade, Stryker is keeping the fight alive, and reminding us that we will survive, and find a way to guide future generations through the fire."
Susan Stryker, a prominent trans academic, has spent decades documenting transgender history and activism through her influential work. The third edition of her groundbreaking book Transgender History reflects the current political climate and violent backlash against trans equality gains made during the Obama administration. Stryker updated the subtitle to "a Resource for Today's Struggle and Tomorrow's" to better capture the ongoing nature of trans activism and the contemporary crisis. Despite the painful process of updating the book, Stryker emphasizes that the fight for trans rights is necessary, ongoing, and ultimately undefeatable. Her work continues to serve as a vital resource for trans people to engage with their history, find community, and understand their place within broader movements for equality and survival.
