Tenderloin Buzz: CVS has a change of heart, a neighborhood news site launches
"The Tenderloin has a dearth of groceries and no pharmacies, and CVS, one of the two pharmacies at the neighborhood's periphery, announced last week that it would be closing its store at 701 Van Ness Ave. at Turk Street in late February. But in a sudden reversal, CVS told Mission Local on Wednesday morning that it no longer plans to close."
"Storage Star, a storage company with facilities across 11 states, is planning to open a 45,000 sq. ft. location at 799 Van Ness Ave. at Eddy Street, the historic building where the long-closed Mini Cooper dealership once sat. Mockups filed with the Planning Department include a street-level mural by a local artist on the outer façade. The San Francisco Heritage recommends the mural be a nod to Van Ness Avenue's legacy as "auto row.""
The Tenderloin lacks grocery stores and has no pharmacies at its center. CVS announced a planned February closure of its 701 Van Ness Ave. store but reversed course and now says the store will not close, apologizing for any confusion. Storage Star plans a 45,000 sq. ft. facility at 799 Van Ness Ave. in the historic former Mini Cooper dealership building, including a street-level mural suggested to nod to Van Ness's 'auto row' legacy. The city's biennial homeless count will occur on Jan. 29 in the morning, with simultaneous surveys conducted by workers.
