AB Hernandez, a 16-year-old transgender athlete, achieved remarkable success by tying for first place in both the high jump and triple jump at a recent track meet in California. This victory occurred amidst ongoing political scrutiny and threats from the Trump administration regarding funding for California schools that permit transgender competitors in girls' sports. The California Interscholastic Federation recently modified its regulations to allow tied placements for transgender athletes, emphasizing inclusivity in athletics. Despite some protests, the atmosphere at the meet was notably positive, celebrating the athletes' achievements and identities.
Although the publicity she's been receiving has been pretty negative, I believe she deserves publicity because she's a superstar. She's a rock star. She's representing who she is.
The meet took place days after the California Interscholastic Federation changed its rules. Now, if a transgender athlete places in a girls' event, the athlete who finishes just behind will also receive the same place and medal.
