'Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean: A New Musical' premieres on June 18, led by Shakina, an artist known for her diverse talents. Originally from Central California, Shakina's journey through community studies and theater arts at UC Santa Cruz fuels her creative drive. Emphasizing that theater requires no permission, she asserts her belief in self-initiative. Collaborating with William Finn, she explores the transformative journey of musical lyrics. The new production revitalizes Ed Graczyk's play, which has seen many adaptations since its 1976 start, culminating in Shakina's passionate and avant-garde vision.
Even while working on my degrees, I was directing at the Actors' Theatre, in Santa Cruz. Basically, I always believed that you don't need permission to make theater, so I just found ways to make it.
I wrote the lyrics with my mentor and lyricist, the incomparable William Finn, who just passed in April. He would always say, 'A song isn't a song until someone else is singing it.'
