Sea lion attacks teenage girl swimming in water off Southern California coast

On Sunday, a 15-year-old girl named Phoebe Beltran was attacked by a sea lion while swimming off Long Beach during tryouts for a junior lifeguard program. The incident occurred when approximately 12 candidates were swimming close to the shore. Lifeguards quickly responded to the attack, which left Beltran with bites on her arms and extremities. She was taken to the hospital but did not require advanced treatment. Tryouts were cancelled and will be rescheduled, while the sea lion swam away and showed no signs of illness.
The incident occurred around noon as Phoebe Beltran, a junior lifeguard candidate, was out swimming during tryouts for a junior lifeguard cadet program.
The lifeguards observed a sea lion emerge from the water, attacking Beltran on her arm. Lifeguards assisted her back to shore.
