Armistead Maupin, 81, met Rock Hudson through Hudson's lover Jack Coates, with whom Maupin had been intimate. The pair encountered each other at a San Francisco social gathering where Hudson read the first chapter of Tales of the City, previously published in the San Francisco Chronicle. They hooked up that night, but Maupin initially felt intimidated; later encounters were more successful. Maupin described Hudson as a very sweet, kind, and attentive man who tried to help Maupin find a husband. Maupin recalled Hudson was closeted for much of his life and died of AIDS-related complications in 1985.
