Shelf Lovers, a queer bookstore in Brisbane, concluded its journey with a vibrant drag story time event led by Cady DeVille. Owner Kat Nurthen announced the store's closure earlier this year due to personal and financial challenges and reminisced on the impact it had, especially in providing representation for LGBTQ+ youth through literature. Despite the closure, Nurthen expressed hope for the future of the business in a different form. The event saw emotional farewells from the community, celebrating the bookstore's contribution to inclusivity.
The Wooloowin store, Shelf Lovers, went out with a bang on the weekend as they hosted a final event before closing the business.
It is with great sadness that we announce that Shelf Lovers will be closing when our current lease finishes at the end of April.
Kat explained that she has hopes for continuing the business 'in some form,' though we don't have any definite answers just yet.
I thought it would be great to have a place here in Brisbane where people could find diverse literature.
