"I made a mistake, and I am sincerely sorry. To our team members, to our customers, and to the LGBTQIA+ community that has been with us since the very beginning, the confusion and hurt we caused around our new policy for Pride flags failed you."
"The initial decision was made to create 'a more consistent, inclusive experience.'"
"Sadarangani showed 'genuine humility' and that he 'sat with our community members, heard their perspective and apologized, not as a formality but as a person who got it wrong and wanted to make it right.'"
Philz Coffee's CEO Mahesh Sadarangani apologized for the decision to remove Pride flags from cafes, acknowledging the hurt caused to the LGBTQIA+ community. The company will allow existing flags to remain and reinstated those taken down. Each of the 82 stores will feature locally created artwork reflecting team members and neighborhood voices. The reversal followed significant criticism and an online petition with over 7,700 signatures. Sadarangani met with San Francisco Pride leaders, expressing genuine humility and a desire to make amends.
