Mary's House for Older Adults has launched Washington, D.C.'s first affordable housing specifically catering to older LGBTQ+ individuals. Located in Fort Dupont, the new residence features 15 single units and shared communal spaces, promoting inclusivity and support. With a focus on health and wellness, the complex aims to counteract the discrimination LGBTQ+ older adults often face in housing. The founders emphasize the importance of dignity and accessibility for all, aiming to foster a secure community for these marginalized elders as they age.
"It is our duty to ensure that all people regardless of gender identity live with dignity and have access to the support and services they need to age in peace," Imani Woody said.
"Our mission extends beyond providing housing. We strive to build welcoming communities that address affordability, accessibility, and the unique needs of LGBTQ/SGL older adults."
