On May 31, 2025, nearly 100 LGBTQ students celebrated their first prom at the historic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, organized by Safe Schools South Florida. Amid an environment of increasing legal restrictions on LGBTQ discussions and care, the event created a safe and affirming atmosphere. Students experienced the joy of prom—dancing, laughing, and expressing themselves freely—marking a significant milestone for many who had never felt comfortable to be themselves in public settings before.
On a warm Saturday evening, close to 100 LGBTQ students from across Miami gathered at the historic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens for a prom of their own... The event offered an affirming space at a time when LGBTQ youth in Florida face increasing hostility.
Dressed in everything from baby blue ball gowns to platform sneakers, the teens danced, laughed, and posed for photos. For many attendees, it was their first prom - and the first time they felt free to be themselves.
