Bi emcee Alan Cumming apologizes after awards show turns into racist, ableist "sh**show" - LGBTQ Nation
"It's now a week since I hosted the BAFTAs. What should have been an evening celebrating creativity as well as diversity and inclusion turned into a trauma triggering sh**show. I'm so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt hearing that word echoed round the world. I'm so sorry the [Tourette] community has been reminded of the lack of understanding and tolerance that abounds regarding their condition."
"Those who have seen I Swear will understand this. My tics have said and done things over the years that have caused huge pain and upset. Tourette's can make my body or voice do things I don't mean."
Alan Cumming hosted the BAFTA Awards on January 22, 2024, but the ceremony became controversial when John Davidson, a disability awareness activist with Tourette syndrome and coprolalia, involuntarily shouted offensive language including slurs at Black actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo during their presentation. Cumming apologized via Instagram, expressing regret for the pain caused to Black people and the Tourette community. Many online commenters incorrectly blamed Davidson for voluntary racism, misunderstanding that coprolalia is an involuntary symptom of Tourette syndrome. Davidson explained that his tics cause his body and voice to perform actions he does not intend, referencing his biopic about his lifelong struggle with the condition.
