BAFTAs host Alan Cumming criticises BBC after 'triggering show'
"It's now a week since I hosted the BAFTAs. What should have been an evening celebrating creativity as well as diversity and inclusion turned into a trauma-triggering s*** show. I'm so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt hearing that word echoed round the world. I'm so sorry the Tourettes community has been reminded of the lack of understanding and tolerance that abounds regarding their condition."
"We were all let down by decisions made to both broadcast slurs and censor free speech."
During the BAFTAs ceremony, Tourette's campaigner John Davidson shouted a racial slur due to his tics while presenting with Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo. Although the pre-recorded broadcast had time to edit the slurs, they were not removed, while some of Davidson's other tics were cut. Additionally, Akinola Davies Jr's "Free Palestine" statement was censored. Host Alan Cumming released a statement describing the event as a trauma-triggering situation, apologizing to Black people and the Tourette's community. Both Warner Bros and StudioCanal stated BAFTA had assured them offensive language would be removed, but this did not occur.
