Johannes Radebe has been announced as one of three new hosts on Strictly Come Dancing, continuing his involvement with the BBC show. He joined Strictly as a professional dancer in 2018 after moving from South Africa to the UK. Before Strictly, he worked as a dance teacher in Johannesburg, performed on cruise ships, and won the Professional South African Latin championships twice. Radebe has spoken about growing up gay in Zamdela, a township outside Sasolburg, and about experiencing anti-LGBTQ+ abuse and witnessing a homophobic attack on a friend. He described himself as flamboyant and embraces his identity publicly.
"To be returning to Strictly Come Dancing in this new role is beyond anything I ever imagined. This show has always stood for joy, heart, and togetherness, and I feel deeply honoured to now help carry that magic forward. To do it alongside the formidable Emma Willis and the utterly brilliant Josh Widdicombe makes it even more special. I'm ready - sequins, nerves, and all... please bear with me. Love Jojo."
"Johannes Radebe was born in Zamdela, Orange Free State, South Africa. He moved to the UK in 2018 to join the cast of professional dancers on the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing. Before joining Strictly, he was a dance teacher in Johannesburg, danced on cruise ships, and won the Professional South African Latin championships twice."
"Radebe hasn't confirmed exactly when he came out, but he has opened up about facing anti-LGBTQ+ abuse during his childhood in South Africa and witnessing a homophobic attack on a friend. In an interview with The Times in August 2023, the dancer - who describes himself as "camp as Christmas, a six foot-plus gay boy with a penchant for heels and feathers" - explained what it was like growing up gay in Zamdela, a township outside the city of Sasolburg."
