Why a 22-year-old German is risking his life for Ukraine

Ruben Mawick, a 22-year-old from Germany, was moved to support Ukraine during the ongoing war, which began before the full-scale February 2022 invasion by Russia. Although he wasn't a trained paramedic initially, he pursued opportunities with trusted aid organizations until he could travel. His first mission took place in Dnipro, and despite the risks of drone surveillance and shelling, he remained determined to help. Ruben's experiences reflect the challenges and dangers faced by volunteers in conflict zones while showcasing their commitment to humanitarian efforts.
"I remember seeing the images of missile strikes in Kyiv at five in the morning. That's when I realised I wanted to go," Ruben told Euronews.
"We were quickly spotted by a drone and had to take cover. A checkpoint about 200 metres in front of us was hit," Ruben remembered.
