On Monday, Ukraine reported the repatriation of 1,245 soldiers' remains from Russia, marking the culmination of a monumental agreement reached in recent peace talks in Istanbul. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced that over 6,000 bodies had been returned since the agreement's implementation. However, Ukrainian officials, including Interior Minister Igor Klymenko, condemned the condition of the remains, alleging mutilation and disorganization during the return process. Russia confirmed its compliance with the agreement and indicated a readiness to return additional bodies, signifying limited cooperation amid conflict.
"Today marks the final stage of the repatriation of fallen soldiers," Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated, highlighting the completion of a significant exchange agreement.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko accused Russia, saying, 'Bodies are returned in an extremely mutilated state, parts of [the same] bodies are in different bags.'
Russia's defense ministry confirmed the handover and stated it had 'fulfilled the agreement,' emphasizing the cooperation despite ongoing hostilities.
Umerov mentioned, 'Since last week, when the implementation of the Istanbul agreements began, we have managed to bring back over 6,000 bodies.'
