Front-line Ukrainian soldiers face a critical challenge with Russia's unjammable fiber-optic drones, leading them to rely on low-tech shotguns for defense. Despite advances in drone technology, electronic countermeasures often fail, making the kinetic approach of shooting down drones their best option. Experts like Vitalii Pervak advocate for shotguns due to fast-changing front lines and resource shortages. Operators, such as Dimko Zhluktenko, emphasize the effectiveness of shotguns as a last resort against incoming threats such as explosive-laden drones. Ukraine is exploring additional countermeasures as drone warfare evolves.
Vitalii Pervak, the CEO of Karlsson, Karas & Associates, said that given how fast the front lines change, Russia's electronic warfare efforts, and Ukraine's regular shortages, "a shotgun is the best option."
Dimko Zhluktenko, a drone operator with Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, mentioned that a shotgun is "the most reliable way to shoot down a drone if it's using the fiber optic" cables.
