Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed interest in a direct meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Vladimir Putin, proposed to be hosted by the Vatican. This move follows discussions with US President Donald Trump, who remarked positively on recent talks with Putin. The Vatican's involvement signifies a diplomatic effort to address ongoing conflicts. Sybiha noted the significance of Zelenskyy's recent meeting with Pope Leo XIV, marking an important diplomatic moment during the pontiff's inauguration celebrations, indicating Ukraine's openness to dialogue and peace efforts.
After the phone calls with Putin and Zelenskyy on Monday, Trump said he believed the conversation with the Russian president "went very well" and that "Russia wants to do large-scale trade with the United States when this catastrophic 'bloodbath' is over."
I can confirm to you that proposals to organise possible contacts, including at the level of leaders, were made by the Vatican, said Sybiha.
The Vatican, as represented by the pope, has stated that it would be very interested in hosting the negotiations. Let the process begin," Trump added.
There was a "wonderful, extremely warm and meaningful meeting between President Zelenskyy and Pope Leo XIV," Sybiha said.
