The Wagner Group has announced its departure from Mali after more than three years of fighting Islamist insurgents, claiming success in stabilizing the region for the Malian military junta. Despite their exit, Russia will maintain a military presence in the country through the Africa Corps, comprised mostly of former Wagner operatives. The move reflects Russia's strategic interests amid diminishing Western influence in Africa. Wagner's exit, termed "Mission accomplished," highlights their role in shifting the power dynamics in the region by expelling French forces.
"Mission accomplished. Private Military Company Wagner returns home," the group announced via its channel on the messaging app Telegram.
Despite Wagner's departure, the Africa Corps, a paramilitary force also controlled by Russia, will continue to stay in the country.
With waning Western influence in the region, Russia has rushed in to fill the gap and offer assistance.
About 70-80% of the Africa Corps group is made up of former Wagner mercenaries.
