United States special envoy Steve Witkoff reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to a permanent peace deal with Ukraine, following a recent meeting in Saint Petersburg. Despite this hopeful outlook, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that negotiating terms for peace would not be simple. There are concerns from Ukraine and European allies that Moscow may use delay tactics in ceasefire discussions, as recent Russian attacks, including one of the war's deadliest in Sumy, continue to undermine the prospects for peace.
Witkoff expressed optimism about a potential peace deal with Ukraine after talks with Putin, stating, "We might be on the verge of something that would be very, very important for the world at large."
Lavrov emphasized the challenges in reaching a consensus on peace terms, indicating that, "agreeing on key components of a peace deal is not easy."
