Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary Easter truce in Ukraine, effective from Saturday night until April 21, expecting Ukraine to reciprocate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the truce as a manipulation, noting ongoing Russian military actions. Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine would agree to a full ceasefire only if Russia does, expressing the need for longer-lasting agreements than the proposed short truce. As diplomatic talks continue involving U.S. officials, the situation remains tense and complex regarding genuine peace efforts and trust-building measures between the two nations.
In a statement Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not say whether or not Ukraine would agree to the truce, but called the proposal "yet another attempt by Putin to play with human lives" and said there were still Russian attacks being launched in the hour before the Russian ceasefire was meant to take effect.
Zelenskyy later said there has not been a complete ceasefire of Russian military action, saying, "according to the Commander-in-Chief reports, Russian assault operations continue on several frontline sectors, and Russian artillery fire has not subsided."
Zelenskyy said, "If a complete ceasefire truly takes hold, Ukraine proposes extending it beyond the Easter day of April 20... Thirty days could give peace a chance."
