Recent talks in Istanbul resulted in an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to swap 1,000 prisoners of war, the largest exchange since the war began in 2022. This development followed a Kremlin spokesperson's confirmation that both countries had shared lists of POWs. Ukraine's President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of this exchange as a significant outcome of the discussions, considering it as a priority for the Ukrainian government. Despite Ukraine's call for a ceasefire, Russia only agreed to the POW exchange, while allegations surfaced regarding Russia's delay in peace negotiations.
The exchange, which will see each side free 1,000 POWs in what would be the largest swap of the war, was agreed to during talks last week in Istanbul.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that the deal to release 1,000 of our people from Russian captivity was perhaps the only tangible result of the meeting.
Peskov added that the process is quite laborious and requires time but emphasized the continued quick pace of negotiations.
Zelenskyy reaffirmed that the return of all Ukrainians from Russian captivity is a top priority, expressing gratitude for those involved in the effort.
