Ukraine and Russia both claimed violations of a cease-fire that was established by President Putin for Easter. Ukraine accused Russia of ongoing artillery attacks and drone usage, while Russia asserted that it adhered to the truce. A Ukrainian commander commented that recent fighting mirrored the ongoing conflict since February 2022. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the U.S. may withdraw its engagement if progress toward peace is not achieved, adding pressure on Ukraine amid stalled negotiations on a minerals deal with President Trump.
The cease-fire, announced as lasting 30 hours, appeared to be a gambit by Putin to show the U.S. that Russia was serious about peace.
A Ukrainian drone unit commander said that the fighting in eastern Ukraine during the cease-fire was similar to how it had been since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
President Zelensky, who had agreed to abide by the truce so long as Russia did, said Russian troops had fired artillery and used drones.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that if the U.S. could not make progress in ending the war, it would consider walking away.
