Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan sign historic border agreement
Briefly

On March 13, 2023, Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon and Kyrgyzstan's President Sadyr Japarov signed a border agreement in Bishkek, resolving decades of conflict along their disputed border. This momentous agreement allows families separated since 2021 to reunite and is framed by both presidents as a foundational step towards strengthened interstate relationships. The border, previously closed due to violent clashes that resulted in numerous casualties, now opens the way for cooperation and stability, with expectations for enhanced security in the broader Central Asian region.
This step will make a significant contribution to strengthening security, stability and sustainable development not only of our states, but also of the entire Central Asian region.
The border treaty will create a solid foundation for further comprehensive expansion of our interstate relations and open a new page in Tajik-Kyrgyz relations.
The signing of the border agreement between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will become a landmark historical event.
Negotiations over the 1000-kilometre frontier lasted 23 years, culminating in a treaty that addresses long-standing disputes and opens borders once more.
