The conflict ignited when Meitei individuals demanded tribal status, which the Kuki fear would marginalize them further. Although the federal government has attempted to manage the crisis through the establishment of ethnic zones, tensions persisted as the Kuki council opposed free movement across these zones, highlighting ongoing grievances and calls for separate administration, illustrating the challenges faced in achieving peace in the region.
