Joseph Kabila, former president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, met with various leaders in the rebel-controlled eastern region, expressing his desire for peace. However, President Felix Tshisekedi's government views Kabila's actions as provocative, suggesting he supports the M23 rebels. The meeting sparked tensions as the ruling party accuses Kabila of being linked to the armed group Alliance Fleuve Congo. Amid ongoing legal troubles, including treason charges, Kabila’s peace initiative raises skepticism and potential political conflict.
The former president called us to express his wish to see peace return," said Joel Amurani, senior bishop and president of the Religious Denominations Platform. "We told him to play the role of referee."
Kabila is the founder and financier of the AFC," said Christian Lumu Lukusa, a leading member of Congo's ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party. "M23 is a terrorist organization... We know their agenda and are preparing accordingly."
