Recent violence in the Gaza Strip has left at least eight Palestinians dead and many wounded during an aid distribution event in Rafah. Witnesses and health officials reported that Israeli military forces opened fire on crowds gathering for assistance from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation amidst a dire humanitarian crisis compounded by months of blockade and military operations. Experts warn of rising hunger and famine threats as the population heavily depends on international aid due to the devastation of local food production capacity. The situation is worsening as tensions between various aid distribution systems escalate, especially with ongoing military engagements.
"There were wounded, dead, and martyrs," Ahmed al-Masri told The Associated Press on Sunday as he returned from one site empty-handed. "It's a trap."
Umm Hosni al-Najjar said she joined the crowd heading to the aid point in Rafah's Tal al-Sultan neighborhood around 4:30 a.m. She said the shooting began as people were advancing to the site a few minutes after her arrival.
