On Tuesday, Ukraine targeted the Crimean Bridge again, a significant infrastructure symbol for Russia, following a bold strike on Russian air bases. The Ukrainian Security Service reported damaging pillars of the bridge using explosives after months of covert preparation. This marks Ukraine's third assault on the bridge since the start of the 2022 invasion, underlining its strategic importance as a supply route. As local channels reported a second blast, the bridge was momentarily closed, highlighting ongoing tensions. Officials emphasize the legitimacy of attacking structures supporting an illegal occupation.
"Today, at 4:44 a.m., without any civilian casualties, the first explosive device was detonated," the agency said in a statement, with accompanying video footage of the detonations.
"There is no place for illegal Russian structures on the territory of our state," Lt. Gen. Vasyl Maliuk, head of the Security Service, said in a statement.
"The underwater support pillars were severely damaged at the seabed level - aided by the equivalent of 1,100 kg of TNT. As a result, the bridge is effectively in an emergency condition."
Ukraine's Security Service claimed in a statement that several pillars were damaged in an early-morning operation, after spending months covertly planting explosives on support structures beneath the water.
