Armenian Protest Leader Archbishop, Supporters Arrested In 'Coup' Probe
Briefly

Armenian Archbishop Bagrat Galstanian was detained alongside 14 supporters on accusations of plotting violent acts to overthrow the government by the Investigative Committee of Armenia. They allegedly discussed plans to cause disruptions and assassinations aimed at destabilizing the regime. Opposition groups, including the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, condemned the arrests as politically motivated, while Galstanian's lawyer noted that law enforcement found no weapons or evidence during the search. The incident reflects heightened tensions between the opposition and the government, with Galstanian directly challenging Prime Minister Pashinian in remarks before his arrest.
The Investigative Committee of Armenia claimed that Archbishop Bagrat Galstanian began preparations for a violent overthrow of the government last November with the members of his opposition-backed movement.
Opposition groups affected by the crackdown condemned it as politically motivated, suggesting that the arrests were aimed at suppressing dissent rather than addressing genuine security concerns.
Galstanian was taken into custody after NSS officers searched his residence in Yerevan, with his lawyer reporting that no weapons or evidence of the alleged plot was found.
Clearly appealing to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, he said: "Evil, listen carefully, you have very little time left. Wait a little longer, we'll come."
