Despite the harsh realities of war in Ukraine and the significant toll on both sides, a sense of optimism is beginning to emerge in Russia. Many Russians hope for an end to hostilities and the lifting of Western sanctions under the anticipated political shift introduced by Donald Trump's administration. Interviews with citizens reveal a preferential desire to reconcile with both America and Ukraine, as pervasive anti-hatred sentiments remain strong. It is expressed that, despite experiencing war, Russians generally prefer peace over animosity, demonstrating a complex emotional landscape amid ongoing conflict.
Katherine, a psychiatrist from St Petersburg who protested against the war in 2022, said she supports peace at all costs. My clients happily say, Well, the Americans are on our side again. That's good because America is a great country after all, she said. Everyone understands that it's better to be friends with America than to fight.
Elena, also from St Petersburg, said: Well done, Trump. Let him at least glue them both [Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine] to the negotiating table while he gobbles up their dinners.
In general, Russians don't really like to hate although they know how. In fact, three years of war have not made Russians hate Ukrainians en masse. They rather sympathise with them.
The sense of optimism among some Russians contrasts starkly with the continued devastation of Ukraine, as many still feel skeptical about a genuine peace thawing relations.
