WATCH: American Runner Chases Down Leader of LA Marathon to Win by Stunning .01 Seconds
"In any race, I just want to give 100%, said Martin, 36. I saw an opportunity to race at the end and give one last push. All I wanted to do is push myself."
"I made an actual move five miles out — when I saw no one else was picking up the pace. I decided I needed to push. At a mile and a half to go, I could see the leader and with 800 meters to go, I was thinking, 'I'm catching him.'"
Nathan Martin, 36, secured an improbable victory at Sunday's Los Angeles Marathon, finishing in 2:11:16.50 and defeating Kenya's Michael Kimani Kamau by just 0.01 seconds—the closest finish in LA Marathon history. Martin executed a strategic late-race surge, making his decisive move five miles from the finish and closing the gap on the leader. With 800 meters remaining, Martin caught and passed Kamau in the final stretch. Kamau collapsed at the finish line and required medical attention. Martin attributed his success to maintaining 100% effort and capitalizing on the opportunity he identified late in the race.
