Kiprotich, Kiriago, and Omaya Atuya broke away early but Kiriago moved to the lead late and set a new course record in 40:47. He was 43 seconds better than Omaya Atuya's year-old former course best. After 13 races across three continents over four months, the World Mountain Running Association concluded the 2025 Mountain Running World Cup with back-to-back races in Slovenia. Richard Omaya Atuya won the Velika Planina uphill in 50:21 with Josphat Kiprotich second and Philemon Kiriago third. Susanna Saapunki dominated the women's uphill in 61:43, Benedetta Broggi edged Kirsty Dickson by one second for second. The following day at Šmarna Gora Kiriago set a new course record in 40:47, moved into the lead overall, and secured the World Cup title as Kenyan men took the top positions.
