Queens Never Quit: A Conversation with Joyce Njeru
"The dream was to change my background, which I can say wasn't that good. I just trusted that I was doing this for my future to be better, and not to give up. I just decided that with the talent I have: You can do better, and your life can be better."
"They are struggling so much for us to get the food and also to have clothes, so I just classified myself as a firstborn. This meant that even as a child, she faced the questions of, 'What can I do, or what can I add for them?'"
Joyce Njeru is one of the world's elite mountain runners from Kenya, holding three Mountain Running World Cup titles and a Golden Trail World Series title. Growing up in a small village with limited resources, Njeru saw running as a pathway to improve her family's financial situation and escape poverty. Her parents struggled to afford school fees and basic necessities, which motivated her to excel in the sport from an early age. Beginning with early success in primary school races, she pursued her dream internationally, training and racing with run2gether in 2017 and later signing with NNormal in 2025. Throughout her career, marked by both significant achievements and periods of struggle, Njeru has remained committed to her core purpose of bettering her life and supporting her family.
