McLaughlin-Levrone sets U.S. 400m bar in semis
"Honored, for sure,"
"I definitely wasn't expecting that time. It just shows the fitness is there. I'm excited for the finals and grateful to have taken down a record by an amazing woman."
"The last 30 meters were a little reserved."
"But it wasn't surprising because I know the work that has been put in. It's really just about executing, and I'm grateful that it showed me it's there."
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone posted a 48.29 in a 400-meter semifinal, breaking Sanya Richards-Ross's 19-year-old U.S. record of 48.70 by .41 seconds. The time was the fastest of 2025 and the seventh-fastest ever, setting up a final with potential to challenge Maria Koch's 1985 world record of 47.60. No woman has gone under 48 seconds since Koch. McLaughlin-Levrone moved from the 400 hurdles to the 400 flat this year after setting a hurdles record at 50.37 and has broken that event's record six times. Training emphasis has been on fitness and execution under coach Bobby K.
