Gaelic Warrior wins Cheltenham Gold Cup for Willie Mullins, but heartbreak as legendary Envoi Allen dies in final Festival race
"Gaelic Warrior's success cements trainer Mullins' position as the joint-most successful Gold Cup trainer of all time, taking his tally to five."
"There was heartbreak for connections of Envoi Allen as the Cheltenham legend passed away after collapsing after the race. The 12-year-old was having the final start of his glittering career in the Cheltenham Festival highlight, with owners Cheveley Park Stud having confirmed he would retire following his run in the blue riband - his eighth appearance in all at the Festival."
"Trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Marsh Walsh for owner JP McManus, the chestnut was sent off the 11-8 favourite in the same race she won by eight and a half lengths last year. In the end victory was assured from some way out, with Dinoblue brushing aside the runner-up, Gavin Cromwell's Only By Night, with ease up the hill."
Gaelic Warrior, ridden by Paul Towend for trainer Willie Mullins, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup as the 11-4 joint-favourite, defeating Jango Baie by eight lengths. The victory marks Mullins' fifth Gold Cup win, cementing his position as joint-most successful Gold Cup trainer of all time. Haiti Couleurs and The Jukebox Man faded in the closing stages, while Inothewayurthinkin finished third in his title defence. Tragically, Envoi Allen, a Cheltenham legend with ten Grade One wins, collapsed and died after the race in his eighth and final Festival appearance. Earlier, Dinoblue successfully defended her Mrs Paddy Power Mares' Chase title under Marsh Walsh, winning by one and a quarter lengths from Only By Night.
