John Korir won the Boston Marathon for the second consecutive year with a record time of 2:01:52, breaking the previous record of 2:03:02. This performance ranks as the fifth fastest marathon ever. Korir's victory was marked by a strong finish, pulling away from competitors near Heartbreak Hill. Sharon Lokedi also defended her title in the women's race, finishing in 2:18:51, the second-fastest time in the event's history. She was followed by three other Kenyan runners in the top four positions.
