2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Champs: Reflections on Growth and Continued Challenges
"From September 25 to 28, some of the world's top mountain running and trail running athletes gathered in Canfranc, Spain, for the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) to represent their countries in four different events. Historically, many top runners have opted to skip the world championships for various reasons, including busy race schedules, sponsorship conflicts, and financial considerations."
"The WMTRC is a result of World Athletics' vision of working with the three globally recognized governing bodies for mountain running, trail running, and ultrarunning: the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), and the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU). The event, now held every other year, combines the longstanding Trail World Championships and the World Mountain Running Championships into a single event featuring Long Trail, Short Trail, Uphill, and Up and Down races."
From September 25–28, 2025, elite mountain and trail athletes competed in Canfranc, Spain, across four WMTRC events and under-20 races. Participation increased sharply since 2022 and 2023, with the Canfranc edition producing the deepest fields across all championship races. Many top runners historically skipped the worlds because of busy race calendars, sponsorship conflicts, and financial constraints. World Athletics organized the biennial WMTRC in partnership with WMRA, ITRA, and IAU to unify Trail and Mountain World Championships into one combined event. The next WMTRC is scheduled for Cape Town, South Africa, in October 2027, presenting opportunities for further growth and improvement.
