2025 Trans Bhutan Trail: The Trail That Connects Us
"Doing hard things is inherent to endurance sports. As we become more capable in our chosen discipline, it feels natural for some of us to do things faster, farther, and more difficult. We climb onto the precipice of our previous capabilities and take a step beyond for the very purpose of not knowing how we will land. Then, rarely, maybe once or twice in a lifetime relationship with sport, we begin something hard, somehow already knowing that we will do it."
"From November 7 to 15, 2025, Bhutanese mountain athlete and guide Rinzin Dorji, professional runner and coach Anna Frost, and I ran and hiked the Trans Bhutan Trail. The trail spans much of the Asian nation of Bhutan in an east-west orientation, is approximately 265 miles long, and features about 74,000 feet of ascent and 79,500 feet of descent when traveling from west to east."
Endurance sports involve repeatedly pushing beyond previous capabilities to attempt faster, farther, and more difficult objectives. Some athletes feel certain they will succeed at a specific hard undertaking. From November 7 to 15, 2025, a supported team of Rinzin Dorji, Anna Frost, and I traversed the Trans Bhutan Trail. The trail spans about 265 miles east–west across Bhutan with roughly 74,000 feet of ascent and 79,500 feet of descent. The team finished in 8 days, 11 hours, and 54 minutes, a believed fastest-known time. The trail was rehabilitated and reopened in 2022 after decades of disrepair and now receives only a few dozen full-trail travelers annually.
