Trump terminates NPR, PBS federal funding with sweeping executive order
Briefly

Late Thursday night, President Trump signed an executive order terminating federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Both organizations have faced criticism and funding cuts from conservative circles for years. Trump declared that funding news media through the government is outdated and compromises journalistic independence. He instructed the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Board to stop direct funding to these organizations and not to offer future funding, reflecting a push to avoid perceived bias and partisanship in the media.
Government funding of news media in this environment is not only outdated and unnecessary but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence.
The CPB Board shall cease direct funding to NPR and PBS, consistent with my Administration's policy to ensure that Federal funding does not support biased and partisan news coverage.
The CPB Board shall cancel existing direct funding to the maximum extent allowed by law and shall decline to provide future funding.
NPR and PBS, which have long been targeted for cuts by conservatives, both receive partial funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
