In May 2023, widespread protests erupted in Pakistan against the military following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. This marked a significant challenge to military authority. Two years later, after brief military clashes with India, public sentiment shifted dramatically, with significant support for the military. Surveys indicated that a vast majority perceived the military as having defended the country successfully, leading to enhanced public approval. Despite this positive surge, analysts caution that this may be a temporary phenomenon resulting from recent events.
The protests marked an unprecedented challenge to the military's dominance, which has long been regarded as the most powerful and influential entity in Pakistan.
Almost exactly two years later, thousands once again took to the streets, but this time in celebration and praise of the military.
A Gallup Pakistan survey conducted between May 11 and 15 showed that 96 percent of more than 500 respondents believed Pakistan had won the conflict.
Initial data and survey trends shared exclusively with Al Jazeera showed 82 percent rated the military's performance as very good, with fewer than 1 percent expressing disapproval.
