Anti-Muslim hate and antisemitism are twin crises. We must confront them together | Binairfer Nowrojee
An armed attack in San Diego killed three people and led Muslim Americans to question whether other places of worship could be targeted, whether children can attend school safely, and whether they can walk in public without fear. Jewish communities face similar reckoning after stabbings in London’s Golders Green neighborhood. Over three years, antisemitism and anti-Muslim hate have surged to record levels amid Middle East wars. In London, tens of thousands rallied behind anti-Muslim agitator Tommy Robinson, who called for remigration and declared a “battle of Britain.” Far-right political platforms across the West have made hostility toward Islam central and spread it beyond far-right circles. Public Ramadan prayers in Trafalgar Square in March were denounced by Conservative politicians as intimidation and domination. The San Diego violence is linked to decades of demonization and dehumanization through politicians, media, popular culture, and social media, with Islam described as inherently violent and Muslims portrayed as incompatible with Western values.
