Retton pleads no contest to DUI, says 'no excuses'
Briefly

Mary Lou Retton, renowned gymnastics champion, recently pleaded no contest to DUI charges after a May traffic stop in Fairmont, WV. A judge fined her $100, aligning with typical penalties for first-time offenders. In her statement, Retton emphasized personal accountability, stating her actions were unacceptable and she aims to learn and improve. Previously, in 2023, she faced health challenges from pneumonia but has since recovered. Retton, who gained fame as the first American female gymnast to win the Olympic all-around, expresses gratitude for ongoing support despite her recent troubles.
What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry.
Fairmont police stopped Retton on May 17 following a report about a person in a Porsche driving erratically. Retton smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words.
