The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced its intention to terminate the Veterans Assistance and Support Program (VASP) effective May 1, following criticism from Republican lawmakers. This move has faced pushback from the mortgage industry and organizations like the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC), which argue it leaves many veterans without crucial support during financial difficulties. The NCLC warns that discontinuing VASP will heighten foreclosure risks for veterans and their families. Additionally, the VA has removed established procedures for evaluating hardship assistance, undermining support and clarity for struggling veteran borrowers.
The National Consumer Law Center criticized the VA's decision to end the VASP program, stating it will dramatically increase the risk of foreclosure for veterans.
Raul Danny Vargas, CEO of the American Latino Veterans Association, emphasized the importance of supporting veterans, stating, 'The last thing we should do is turn our backs on them when they need help.'
The VA's decision to discontinue the VASP program was based on criticism from Republican lawmakers, who accused it of being politically motivated.
With the shutdown of the VASP program, the VA has rescinded steps for considering veterans for hardship assistance, reducing consistency and transparency in the process.
