Why using shorthand like 'thx' and 'k' in texting is hurting your relationships
Briefly

Research indicates that while many people believe abbreviations improve digital communication, they may actually diminish it. In surveys and experiments, people rated individuals who used shorthand as less sincere. With 90% of respondents using abbreviations regularly, a disparity exists between texters’ perceptions and the actual sentiment conveyed. The brevity of these messages can be interpreted as a lack of effort, ultimately harming interpersonal relationships and leading to feelings of being shortchanged during exchanges.
Our findings suggest that the mere inclusion of abbreviations, although seemingly benign, starts feeling like a brush-off. Recipients sense a lack of effort, which causes them to disengage.
Regardless of the context, participants rated the sender who used abbreviations as less sincere and far less worthy of a reply, demonstrating the impact of truncated communication.
