In a recent episode of 'The White Lotus,' Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sam Nivola's characters, Saxon and Lochlan Ratliff, engaged in a controversial kiss, igniting discussions about the portrayal of brotherly relationships. Nivola explained the motivations behind the scene, emphasizing the emotional depth and relatability of the characters' actions. He noted that while the scene was provocative and uncomfortable, it harkens to real feelings of desperation for approval. Both actors relied on their instincts and the director's guidance, preferring not to overplan the dynamic to provide authentic performances that resonate with audiences.
We shot it a few different ways, and we talked about it a lot. I think at the end of the day, it was supposed to just be like they're all really f-ed up, and, of course, kissing your brother is incredibly wrong and weird and gross.
But I think as is the case with 'The White Lotus,' it's like these crazy actions and sort of heightened reality coming from really real emotions that are actually really relatable to your everyday guy.
