All relationship types operate through give-and-take expectations that create supportive, destructive, or gray-area dynamics. Undistorted narcissism is defined as self-interest and reflects the transactional core of social exchange. Cooperative code-dependence, also described as interdependence and collaboration, centers on this balance and enables relationship resonance. When the exchange shifts out of balance, darker behaviors emerge. Narcissistic supply replaces transactional exchange with a one-sided, self-contained feed that supports the actor. Narcissism centers on power, control, dominance, and ego-imposition, while narcissistic supply is a distortion of narcissistic source.
