Adolescence involves critical transitions, especially when starting college. Teens in serious relationships face dilemmas about staying together or managing long-distance. While relationships often remain intact, prioritizing personal growth is essential, as developing independence can lead to natural breaks. Parents may think of college as a chance to grow away from high school relationships, but many young couples struggle with this aspect as they feel pressure to maintain commitments. Guidance is necessary to help teens navigate these changes.
Young people should be able to pursue goals on their own. If the relationship is supposed to work out, it will. That's one of the reasons going to college is frequently a breaking point for young couples.
The young people I interviewed who kept their high school relationships going during college spoke of feeling torn between their commitment to their partners and being present in their day-to-day lives, particularly when distance is involved.
