Paul O'Sullivan, aged 61, is among the 24,000 individuals excluded from the Mother and Baby Redress Scheme. He reflects on the situation using a chessboard analogy, emphasizing the interconnectedness of individual experiences and events. O'Sullivan describes the necessity of viewing the broader context rather than isolated incidents, asserting that seemingly distant elements are ultimately linked. His analogy illustrates how each experience is vital in understanding the comprehensive impact of the Mother and Baby Home system.
"It's like a chess board," Paul O'Sullivan explains, as we sit outside the former Bessborough Mother and Baby Home, where his mother had spent several days in the lead-up to his birth.
"There are 64 squares on the board; you can't look at one square individually, you've got to look at it all together. From the top to the bottom might seem distant, but eventually they're all linked through pieces on the board. Each little square is another piece that tells me about what took place."
