Help! I Think My Roommate Is Up to Something Bizarre in His Room. I Can Smell It.
"My bedroom is right above his, and through the air vent in his direction, I regularly hear a sound pretty much identical to peeing into a toilet. There's also a urine-like smell detectable at times around his room, and he rarely comes out into the rest of the house (I work from home and so am around a lot)-so the pieces seem to fit together."
"Call a house meeting or send an email explaining that some of you have noticed the scent of urine, and his room is one of the possible sources. Let everyone know that you're going to be contacting your landlord (or, if one of the housemates owns the home, say you'll be calling in a professional) to investigate whether there's a problem with mold, which can give off that scent. ( It's true!)"
One housemate exhibits reclusive behavior and rarely leaves his room. A resident above the room hears sounds through the vent that resemble urination and occasionally detects a urine-like odor near that room. The combination of sounds, smell, and limited housemate interaction raises suspicion of indoor urination into a receptacle. Recommended steps include calling a house meeting or emailing housemates to state that a urine scent has been noticed and that the landlord or homeowner will be contacted to arrange a professional inspection for mold or other causes. Inspection or social pressure may reveal the source and allow remediation.
