Americans spent 1 hour 39 minutes more per day at home in 2022 than in 2003, while the share hosting or attending a social event on an average day fell by 50% over two decades. Socializing declined and isolation rose. More than half of Americans often or sometimes feel isolated, and stress has increased; stressed people commonly cancel social plans. Trading social time for “me time” reduces relationships, identified as the No. 1 predictor of a happy life, so inviting friends for low-stakes visits can be easier than forcing frequent outings.
